Arizona Trip 3/19-3/27/2017

We had a great vacation with ups and downs but it was fun to get out to Arizona.

We got out to the Grand Canyon which is truly something you have to see. A Parks on the Air activation was attempted but only 7 QSOs were made before we had to hit the road to Flagstaff.

WØASA (Sarah’s new callsign which was granted while we were in AZ) and I went on a short hike up the Mormon Loop Trail on South Mountain. I brought my radio pack with and talked to two great hams, Mike wG7D and Brian WB7QDR.

On South Mountain off of the Mormon Loop Trail.

I drove out to Sun City to meet with some of my favorite hams who I have the pleasure of talking to over Wires-X while in Ely. I got to tour a couple ham shacks and it was great meeting up with the gang as always.

The next day, I attended the Maricopa Amateur Radio Association club meeting. I joined this club as Grandma Linda (my mother in-law) lives in Maricopa. I also passed my General exam at a club meeting there. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to do a presentation to the club on portable HF operating. My presentation was well received and I think I may have peaked some interest in getting out of the shack. I can’t wait to attend another meeting in Maricopa.

The following day, early in the morning, I drove to Camelback Mountain.

Sunrise from Camelback Mountain

I started my hike up Camelback Mountain in the dark which made for easy parking and no crowded trail. Once at the top I had some time to spare prior to setting up radio equipment.

A great sight from the summit of Camelback Mountain.

I began setting up my radio gear and completed my first Summits on the Air (SOTA) activation. I made contact with hams across the USA and many in the Phoenix valley. I was the 9th Activator for this summit.

While descending, I learned Asa needed to go to the hospital and once back in Maricopa I arrived to a smiling, laughing,  baby with bronchialitis (later diagnosed by the ER doctor).

I picked up a new hiking pack which I’m going to review in another post. I am very happy with my purchase!

Arizona was great and I can’t wait to be back with my wife and our kids!
